Driving Test Booking Changes 2026: What Learner Drivers Need to Know

If you are learning to drive in Burton upon Trent, Swadlincote, Ashby-de-la-Zouch or Coalville, booking your practical driving test now works quite differently from how it did only a few months ago.

During 2026, the DVSA introduced sake the booking system fairer, reduce the resale of driving tests and give genuine learner drivers more control over their own bookings.

Unfortunately, whenever driving test waiting times are long, learners can also become targets for unofficial booking services, cancellation apps and social media scams.

So what has actually changed, what are you still allowed to do, and what should you avoid?

You must now book your own driving test

Since 12 May 2026, car driving tests can only be booked by the learner driver who will actually be taking the test.

Your driving instructor can still help and advise you, but they cannot book, change, swap or cancel the test on your behalf.

When booking, it is worth speaking to your instructor first. The DVSA specifically recommends agreeing that you are ready to take the test and obtaining your instructor's reference number before booking. Adding this reference number allows the booking system to check whether your instructor is available.

This is particularly important if you intend to use your instructor's car on test day.

Booking a test first and telling your instructor afterwards could leave you with a test date when either the instructor or their car is unavailable.

You can now only change your test twice

Another major change came into effect on 31 March 2026.

Previously, a driving test booking could be changed up to six times. You can now make only two changes to an existing booking.

Changing the date, time or test centre counts as a change, as does swapping your appointment with another learner. However, changing more than one detail at the same time still counts as a single change.

Once you have used both changes, you cannot simply keep moving the appointment. If you need to change it again, you will normally need to cancel the booking and make a new one.

This makes choosing a realistic test date much more important.

At Mark Jordan Driving School, we have always believed that having a test booked should not determine whether you are ready. Your driving ability should determine whether you are ready for the test.

You cannot simply move your test anywhere in the country

Since 9 June 2026, another restriction has been introduced.

If you decide to change test centre, you can normally only move your test to one of the three nearest test centres to the centre where your test is currently booked, or back to the centre where that current booking originally started.

This reduces the practice of booking a test hundreds of miles away simply because an appointment is available and then repeatedly searching for something closer to home.

For learners around Burton, Swadlincote, Ashby and Coalville, it makes sense to think carefully about where you genuinely intend to take your test before making the initial booking.

What about driving test cancellation apps?

This is an area where there is still a lot of outdated information online.

Under the current DVSA rules, you are not allowed to use unofficial services that scan the DVSA driving test booking system looking for available appointments. This includes cancellation-finder websites and apps which search the booking system for you.

DVSA warns that if activity linked to your driving licence appears to break its booking rules, it can restrict your online access or cancel your booking.

You can still search for an earlier appointment yourself through the official GOV.UK driving test booking service.

That is very different from giving your driving licence details to an unofficial company or allowing automated software to repeatedly search the system for you.

Be particularly careful with driving tests advertised on social media

Learners should also be cautious about people advertising supposedly available driving tests through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other platforms.

DVSA says scammers have used social media posts offering appointments at genuine test centres before moving conversations into private messages or WhatsApp.

DVSA guidance published in July 2026 confirms that people, websites and apps are not allowed to resell car driving test appointments, use bots to search the booking service or book car tests on behalf of other people. Suspicious activity can be reported directly to DVSA.

If someone claims they can guarantee you a driving test for an inflated fee, that should immediately raise questions.

Remember the 10-working-day cancellation rule

There is one other rule learners sometimes overlook.

Since 8 April 2025, you normally need to give at least 10 full working days' notice when changing or cancelling a car driving test if you want to avoid losing your test fee. Monday to Saturday count as working days, but Sundays and public holidays do not.

That makes communication with your instructor even more important.

If your test is approaching and you are not genuinely ready, deciding early gives you far more options than leaving the decision until the last few days.

Don't allow the test booking to control your driving lessons

The biggest lesson from all these changes is actually quite simple.

Book sensibly, communicate with your instructor and concentrate on becoming test-ready rather than simply getting the earliest possible appointment.

A driving test appointment is not a deadline by which you must somehow become ready.

For nervous learners in particular, putting yourself under pressure because a test is approaching can sometimes make learning more difficult rather than quicker.

Whether you're taking driving lessons in Burton upon Trent, Swadlincote, Ashby-de-la-Zouch or Coalville, your aim should be to reach a standard where you can drive safely, confidently and independently — not simply reach the date printed on your booking confirmation.

At Mark Jordan Driving School, we'll always give you an honest assessment of your progress and help you plan towards your practical test realistically.

Because getting a test appointment is important.

Being genuinely ready for it is far more important.
